Kendell’s Story: A Dream as Bold as Barbie
When Kendell joined the Bert’s Big Adventure family in February 2026, she instantly inspired us with a dream that sparkles just as bright as Barbie’s pink convertible! We found out she wants to design dolls that look like her one day, complete with fabulous wheelchairs that celebrate strength, style, and her beautiful spirit.
Kendell’s journey began long before her Barbie dream came to reality. She was born at just 24 weeks, weighing only 1 pound, 3 ounces, and measuring a mere 11 inches long. Her lungs were severely underdeveloped, and she was rushed straight to the NICU. Soon after birth, Kendell suffered a brain bleed that later led to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.
After 139 days in the NICU, she finally came home on oxygen with a feeding tube, breathing treatments, and ongoing physical and occupational therapy. At just two years old, her family faced another frightening chapter when Kendell’s eyes began to yellow. Doctors soon discovered that her red blood cells were breaking down, and after an emergency hospital visit, Kendell was diagnosed with sickle cell disease.
But here’s the most important part of Kendell’s story: She is not defined by her diagnoses. She is defined by her dreams, her courage, her creativity, and her unstoppable Barbie-level confidence.
Lights, Camera, Barbie!
When Mattel heard about Kendell’s story and her dream of designing Barbie accessories one day, they knew they wanted to be part of her adventure. Nancy Molenda, Vice President of Global Corporate Events and Philanthropy at Mattel, joined us at the 2026 Bert’s Big Adventure Send-Off Broadcast to celebrate Kendell and her inspiring journey.
Mattel’s philanthropy team helped bring Kendell’s Barbie dreams to reality by inviting her and her family to a special Barbie-themed experience. Kendell received dozens of Barbie dolls, Barbie outfits, and all kinds of pink treasures to make her feel like she was Barbie’s closest friend!
Mattel believes something powerful: play isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. Through Mattel’s Mattel’s Play It Forward initiatives, Barbie has encouraged children to dream big and explore their limitless potential. That belief aligns perfectly with Bert’s Big Adventure’s mission to create joy, confidence, and unforgettable experiences for children who deserve to dream without limits.
A VIP Barbie Dream Come True
From the moment Kendell arrived, she was treated like the superstar she truly is. She stepped straight into Barbie magic with a full glam transformation, complete with a signature pink braid, custom nail art, shimmering face gems, and head-to-toe Barbie sparkle that made her shine with confidence and joy.
To make the moment even more special, Mattel surprised Kendell with a one-of-a-kind custom Barbie sketch designed in her exact likeness, right down to her jacket, shoes, and signature style!
Kendell’s star power continued to shine as she took center stage with the orchestra to reenact the iconic Barbie movie intro, a moment she had been eagerly anticipating all day.
Two Barbie designers also personally sought Kendell out to hear her ideas on making Barbie more inclusive and representative. Her creativity, passion, and vision made such a powerful impression that they extended an incredible invitation: a visit to Mattel Headquarters to see how Barbie is designed from the ground up. Yes! Kendell is officially on her way to helping shape the future of Barbie.
Mattel even surprised the family with a once-in-a-lifetime, private meet-and-greet with Serena Williams.
A Dream Stay by the Sea
To make the experience even more magical, our incredible friends at The Diplomat Beach Resort gifted Kendell and her family a beautiful two-bedroom suite for the weekend. When they learned this would be Kendell and Kyro’s very first time seeing the ocean, they went above and beyond to ensure their beachfront stay was unforgettable.
The rooms were thoughtfully decorated with Kendell and Kyro’s favorite colors and characters, creating their very own Barbie Dream House by the sea.
The family also enjoyed a stunning beachfront dinner and a private beach cabana, giving them the perfect place to relax, play, and soak in every magical moment together. Watching Kendell and Kyro experience the ocean for the very first time was filled with wonder, joy, and memories that their family will cherish forever. That’s not all!
The Barbie magic continued even after they returned home with even more Barbie surprises waiting for Kendell right at her front door.
