Sweet Oliver’s Story
Life has a way of throwing curveballs, both good and bad. Unfortunately, for one brave boy named Oliver, life’s more difficult curveballs started at birth. Oliver arrived early, weighing a mere 4 pounds, and was whisked away to the hospital’s NICU. However, his family believed they had no reason to worry, he just needed to grow.

Just 2 days later, Oliver’s mom, Amanda, arrived at the NICU to find Oliver receiving a fetal echogram after the night nurse heard what she believed to be a murmur during her shift. This was the first time Amanda was made aware of a potential heart issue in her newborn baby.

Oliver was immediately rushed to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta for a cardiac catheterization procedure, where doctors diagnosed him with multiple heart defects: a hole in between the left and right ventricle, no pulmonary valve, and an aorta in the wrong position. The moment Amanda received his Tetralogy of Fallot diagnosis, she felt like the whole world stopped.
Oliver’s courageous journey continued as a stent was implanted soon after his diagnosis, and he remained in the NICU to recover for five long weeks. Once home, Oliver faced regular cardiologist visits and, at just 10 months old, underwent his first open-heart surgery. On his third birthday, his conduit was replaced at Stanford University. Eventually, he will need a pulmonary valve, but doctors are waiting for his precious heart to grow with age.
Though the odds were stacked against him, Oliver’s family stayed strong. But in October 2024, another difficult curveball hit, Amanda was laid off. After applying to countless jobs, she finally received an offer she couldn’t refuse, but it required a move to Virginia for training. With hope for a new beginning, Amanda, Oliver, and his sister Zoë packed up, to relocate to Virginia for a few months for Amanda’s training – leaving behind their life in Georgia.

Oliver’s family hopes to return to Georgia to find a comfortable home to live, work, play, and most importantly, get the fresh start they so desperately need and deserve.
