Today’s Fairy Godparent spotlight belongs to the incredible Selama! Here’s what she has to say about her magical Fairy Godparent journey so far.
“I’ve been volunteering with Bert’s Big Adventure since 2019 and officially became a Fairy Godparent in 2022. It’s difficult to find the perfect way to briefly explain what being a Fairy Godparent means to me, but it all comes back to three words: joy, love, and appreciation.”

“The joy I feel when a kid comes barreling toward me, screaming my name in excitement and ready to give the biggest hug imaginable; the love displayed both within families and between families and volunteers; and the appreciation felt by everyone involved with this amazing organization – from families supporting each other through tough times to appreciation for all the volunteers, sponsors, and especially the insanely talented and hardworking Bert’s Big Adventure staff who make the magic happen.”

“Being a fairy godparent has been a rewarding experience for me! These kids and their families have taught me so much about strength, perspective, and gratitude. Witnessing the challenges they face every day, yet still showing so much love and appreciation for life and for each other, is humbling. I truly cherish being a Fairy Godparent, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for me on this adventure!”
Magical Moments
“Experiencing the Walt Disney World Send-Off Celebration for the first time was the definition of a magical moment! I would listen to the broadcast every year on The Bert Show and could hear all the fun, high energy, and emotions, but witnessing it first hand is unlike anything else. It’s so beautiful to see the start of a lifelong journey and bond for all the new kids and their families. And the best part is that every send-off experience is so different because of the new families coming in that I feel like I’m experiencing it for the first time every year!”
“An extra special magical moment that I will never forget was with sweet Malakai. I went to visit him one day when he wasn’t feeling well, and I brought him some things that I thought he might enjoy.”

“As I handed them to him, he looked at me with such genuine appreciation and gratitude and said, “this was so thoughtful of you to think of me. I’ll keep some for myself and share the rest with my siblings so they can appreciate you, too. Thank you for taking time out of your day to hang out with me.” It took everything in me to not burst into tears right in front of him; how someone so young could express such appreciation for something as simple as a visit from me and some treats truly blew my mind.”
Thank you, Carter’s Charitable Foundation for sponsoring our Fairy Godparent Program and a BIG thanks to Selama for being such a light to our kiddos and their families! Will you join us in showing her some extra love and appreciation?

Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo!
Launched in May of 2010 through the Carter’s Charitable Foundation, our Fairy Godparent Volunteer Program supports Bert’s Big Adventure’s children and their families through the stress and uncertainty of hospitalizations. The beloved fairy godparents visit Bert’s Big Adventure kiddos at partner hospitals daily throughout their hospitalization, bringing toys, activities, food and a much-needed break for the entire family.

In addition to the Fairy Godparent Volunteer Program, Carter’s also provides a team of volunteers at the Disney Send-Off Celebration and Family Reunion Adventures throughout the year. Because of its strong support and unwavering commitment to Bert’s Big Adventure, Carter’s has become a trusted teammate, helping Bert’s Big Adventure accomplish more each year.
As a token of our appreciation, we’re going behind the scenes of our Fairy Godparent program and bragging about a volunteer every first Friday of the month! Won’t you help us in making them feel extra special and loved?
