About The Race Across America

race-across-america-mapThe Race Across America, or RAAM, is a bicycle race across the United States that started in 1982.  RAAM is among the best known and longest annual endurance events in the world, spanning 3,000 miles with nonstop cycling from start to finish.

The Race inspires everyone who has been a part of it – racer, crew, staff and fans. RAAM is the true test of speed, endurance, strength and camaraderie. There is no race that matches the distance, terrain and weather or that tests an athlete’s spirit from beginning to end.

Rider Bios

Chris Green – 38 Years Old

  • Name of Bike – Bike’s name is Louise after my Grandmother.
  • Cycling Accomplishments – In 7 years I have gone from overweight couch potato to 6-time Ironman. I consider a 100-mile ride a warm-up for a fun weekend.
  • Favorite Place to Ride – Gaps, or anywhere in North Georgia
  • What RAAM Means to Me – RAAM means I get to see how much pain I can handle for 3,000 miles!

Brigette Killion – 44 Years Old

  • Name of Bike – Big Girl
  • Cycling Accomplishments – 10th place QOM 6 Gap Century 2012 / 3rd place – beginner category Grant Park Criterium 2011 / rode almost 10,000 miles in 2012 / did three 300K brevets in 2012
  • Favorite Place to Ride – Gaps in North GA, Kirkwood to Stone Mountain route with KSR
  • What RAAM Means to Me – I have dreamed of riding RAAM for some time now and finally being able to do it is a dream come true. I am keenly aware of the work ahead of me in the next 6 months, but I can already envision celebrating on the pier in Annapolis with 3 great teammates and a crew to which I will forever be indebted.

Beau Bearden – 45 Years Old

  • Name of Bike – I am one of the few without a name, but I have a feeling that it will have one before I reach the finish line.
  • Cycling Accomplishments – My first organized century ride was at the age of 9. I made it 75 miles. Since then I have completed countless centuries and have finished10 Ironman.
  • Favorite place to ride – North Georgia Mountains. They are as equally beautiful as challenging.
  • What RAAM Means to Me – After crewing for the world record breaking Power, Pedal & Ponytails team last year, there was no doubt that I had to take on this challenge. I wish I knew how to put into words what this means. There is the obvious physical and mental challenge that it poses, but more important is what is learned about oneself from taking on a bigger-than-life challenge such as RAAM.

Chad Carter AKA “Kansas”- 43 Years Old

  • Name of Bike – Green Machine II
  • Favorite Place to Ride – ATS Pain Cave at 5am
  • What RAAM Means to Me – Hmmm.  I think people in our sport need a greater and bigger challenge to take us to a new level of realization about ourselves. You have to suffer to get that reward. I do not believe I can train to this level or go through this without becoming a better person, better friend, better husband, and better dad. Oh, and I get to ride my bike across the US at 20 miles an hour. Now that’s a great way to see the states.
